
Chuckberry J. Pascual is an award-winning Filipino novelist, short story writer, and translator. He is the recipient of multiple National Book Awards and the Kids’ Choice Awards, and is known for his works of fiction and literary criticism. His books include the novel Ang Nawawalang Barangay (The Vanishing Village), the acclaimed short story collection Ang Nawawala (The Vanished), and the popular young adult series Mars, May Zombie! (Mars, Zombies Are Coming!). He has also received an award for his Filipino translation of Miguel Syjuco’s Ilustrado and has been honored with the Dangal ng UST Hall of Fame award.
Pascual is a Full Professor at the University of Santo Tomas, where he leads the MA Creative Writing Program at the Graduate School and teaches literature and creative writing at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He is a Resident Fellow at the UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies and a Faculty Researcher at the UST Research Center for Culture, Arts, and Humanities.
He holds a PhD in Malikhaing Pagsulat sa Filipino (Creative Writing in Filipino) from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where his dissertation received the Best Dissertation Award. He also earned his BA in Malikhaing Pagsulat sa Filipino and MA in Araling Pilipino (Philippine Studies) from the same institution. Born and raised in Malabon, he now resides in Manila.

The book presents a fascinating analysis of Philippine standalone movie theaters as homosexual spaces. By approaching the homosexualization of these establishments through an innovative combination of literary and sociocultural analysis, the author conveys a range of understandings of the space. The use of literary texts as a form of ethnography provides an interesting entry point in understanding the queer and possibly liberating potential of the movie theater such that it is within the confines of this space where norms are suspended, blurred, and remade.
